DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING

The Department was split from the then Department of Energy and Environmental Engineering into two departments, namely the Department of Energy and Petroleum and the Department of Civil and Environmental respectively in 2018.

The department runs both undergraduate and graduate programs. The BSc in Environmental Engineering program commenced in the 2013-2014 academic year under the then Department of Energy and Environmental Engineering. However, the Civil Engineering program started in the 2017-2018 academic year. The postgraduate programs (MSc and PhD) in Environmental Engineering and Management commenced in the 2015-2016 academic year.

The Civil and Environmental Engineering at UENR is focused on applying engineering and science to help find solutions to the emerging challenges of our changing world and important societal problems of the twenty-first century.

Through graduate and undergraduate education as well as research, UENR Civil and Environmental engineers strive to: 

  1. Improve and expand infrastructure and protect the environment,
  2. Develop engineering solutions for significant societal impact, and
  3. Accommodate and integrate complex environmental and infrastructure systems that are required to:
  • - Allow for the increasing population in urban areas,
  • - Adapt to effects from climate change and natural hazards, and
  • - Incorporate effects on human health.

A Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering that is recognized in the region, nationally and in the sub-region for excellence in engineering education, fundamental and applied research, and leadership in professional and public service.

The Mission of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is to educate civil and environmental engineering students comprehensively to become leaders in providing solutions to important societal problems of the twenty-first century.

We achieve this mission by:

  1. Continuing to be GTEC accredited in undergraduate and graduate education and constantly responding to the educational needs of the region and the nation;
  2. Training, motivating, and mentoring the next generation of leaders for the region and the nation to plan and solve problems of societal importance, to cooperate as productive team members, to engage in life-long learning and to act professionally and ethically;
  3. Being the region and national leader in extending the state of knowledge and technology through forward-thinking, innovative, fundamental and applied research;
  4. Promoting the understanding and use of new ideas, technologies, and practices for the improvement of society through service and leadership in local, national, and sub-regional communities and engagement in life-long learning.
